How many country houses are there in the UK?

There are at least 3,704 standing country houses or stately homes in the UK.

This number counts domestic listings represented by the National Trust, the Historic Houses Association, the DiCamillo database and more. Every architectural style and period is covered.

The majority of UK stately homes remain in private hands with limited public access, but 205 are open via the National Trust.

A further 495 have some level of access through the Historic Houses Association, but usually with limited flexibility.

Properties not affiliated with the National Trust, Historic Houses Association, local authorities or similar may offer fleeting access as hotels, wedding venues, or hosts as one-off special events. All individual houses written about on this site have public footpath access to their surrounding villages or estates as a minimum.
